- Development of robust and efficient DAE solvers to handle the equation systems formed by the simulation languge SMILE ( K.-H. Dehmel, H. Schwandt & C. Robbenhaar), especially
+ handle the discontinuities in the systems efficiently
+ exploit the irregular sparsity structure of the systems
+ find consistent inital values from bad inital guesses
+ support solvers for both stiff and non-stiff problems
+ give useful and for the user understandable error messages (this is sometimes harder than You might imagine)
+ couple correctly with external solvers of special subsystems
+ allow flexible and easy exchange of different integration methods
+ support accurate and efficiently computed gradients of the solution for afterwards optimization
+ several support tools as regular output feature, integral value computation, startup decoupling helper components, etc

- Efficient modelling and simulation of a long time heat water storage (R.Köcher)

+ one-dimensional model to get reasonable computing time
+ inherits diffusion, forced and free convection, heat transition and radiation losses
+ modelling of special boundary conditions to include mixing phenomena in loading phase
+ support special construction features such as heat exchangers, variable height loading, etc

- Simulation of arbitrary meshed thermal networks ( M.Hinze & R.Köcher )

+ allow arbitrary meshes without predetermined flow direction
+ graph theoretic approach to formulate the balance equations for the volumetric streams in an equation system of minimal dimension
+ dynamic simulation of thermal transport
+ special Newton-like adapted solver scheme
+ open interface for arbitrary models of producers and customers
+ exploitation of sparsity in the network
+ allows controller completely to switch off some branches without leakage current
